    Engineering development and control design of a system for paraplegic tricycling

    The aim of this study was the design of a cycle device to be used by patients with Spinal Cord Injury (SCI), using the technique of Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES). A complete literature review of former projects in the areas of Design Engineering, Control Engineering, Physiologic and Psychologic investigations in SCI FES cycling was done. All results achieved so far were summarized. Based on the review, a commercially available tricycle was modified for the demands of SCI people. A 10 Bit shaft encoder was used to feed back information from the tricycle and the cyclist. A software for the stimulation of the muscles in the lower limbs was developed. The Real Time Toolbox of Matlab was used for the data acquisition between the tricycle and the PC. A simple approach was invented to find a good first approximation of the individual stimulation pattern for the Gluteal, Hamstring, and Quadriceps muscle groups. Initial experiments were done. A velocity compensation routine, which was part of the software as well, allowed a healthy subject, stimulated via FES, to increase the pedal frequency to more than 100 rev per minute. A closed loop controller, based on system identification and analytical controller design, was implemented into the software as well. Experiments showed that the controller was able to fix the pedal frequency to a constant value on one hand, but also to solve dynamic tasks on the other hand. This is a significant original contribution, as this type of feedback controller has not previously been applied in FES cycling. The system described in the thesis is currently being used in a pilot study of FES cycling with three paraplegic subjects at the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow

    The study aimed at developing an appropriate model to improve quality and develop management system of school guidance and counseling services. The study was divided into three phases conducted for three years in different school levels ranging from primary to higher education, in Java and Sumatra. The extension of the study was also conducted in Kindergarten and Special Education setting. The whole study came up with: the general models which provided a basis for developing frame work of guidance and counseling in every school level; frame work of guidance and counseling for every school level; standardized inventory of students\u27 developmental tasks developed in a computerized system; and learning packages developed based on students\u27 needs and development.     In this technical report, we present prototypical implementations of innovative tools and methods developed according to the working plan outlined in Technical Report TR-B-09-05 [23]. We present an ontology modularization and integration framework and the SVoNt server, the server-side end of an SVN- based versioning system for ontologies in the Corporate Ontology Engineering pillar. For the Corporate Semantic Collaboration pillar, we present the prototypical implementation of a light-weight ontology editor for non-experts and an ontology based expert finder system. For the Corporate Semantic Search pillar, we present a prototype for algorithmic extraction of relations in folksonomies, a tool for trend detection using a semantic analyzer, a tool for automatic classification of web documents using Hidden Markov models, a personalized semantic recommender for multimedia content, and a semantic search assistant developed in co-operation with the Museumsportal Berlin. The prototypes complete the next milestone on the path to an integral Cor- porate Semantic Web architecture based on the three pillars Corporate Ontol- ogy Engineering, Corporate Semantic Collaboration, and Corporate Semantic Search, as envisioned in [23]

    Charm quark mass from QCD sum rules for the charmonium system

    In this work, the charm quark mass is obtained from a QCD sum rule analysis of the charmonium system. In our investigation we include results from nonrelativistic QCD at next-to-next-to-leading order. Using the pole mass scheme, we obtain a value of Mc=1.70±0.13M_c=1.70\pm 0.13 GeV for the charm pole mass. The introduction of a potential-subtracted mass leads to an improved scale dependence. The running MSˉ{\rm \bar{MS}}-mass is then determined to be mc(mc)=1.23±0.09m_c(m_c) = 1.23 \pm 0.09 GeV.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figure

    Ammonium pertechnetate reacts in mixtures of trifluoromethanesulfonic anhydride and trifluoromethanesulfonic acid under final formation of ammonium pentakis(trifluoromethanesulfonato)oxidotechnetate(V), (NH4)2[TcO(OTf)5]. The reaction proceeds only at exact concentrations and under the exclusion of air and moisture via pertechnetyl trifluoromethanesulfonate, [TcO3(OTf)], and intermediate TcVI species. 99Tc nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) has been used to study the TcVII compound and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), 99Tc NMR and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) experiments indicate the presence of the reduced technetium species. In moist air, (NH4)2[TcO(OTf)5] slowly hydrolyses under formation of the tetrameric oxidotechnetate(V) (NH4)4[{TcO(TcO4)4}4] ⋅10 H2O. Single-crystal X-ray crystallography was used to determine the solid-state structures. Additionally, UV/Vis absorption and IR spectra as well as quantum chemical calculations confirm the identity of the species

    Long-term functional outcome and quality of life following rotationplasty for treatment of malignant tumors

    Background: Malignant bone tumors of the lower extremity are more frequently found in children and adolescents than in adults. Modern treatment regimens led to high limb salvage rates and offer the choice between endoprosthetic replacement and rotationplasty in many cases. Rotationplasty has proven to be an effective, highly functional option in short-and mid-term studies. Aim of this study was to assess long-term results regarding quality of life and functionality after rotationplasty and to compare the obtained results to a representative healthy German sample cohort. Methods: In total 12 patients who underwent rotationplasty between 1991 and 2001 were enrolled in this study. After physical examination, they were evaluated regarding health related quality of life, functional outcome and psychosocial status. While quality of life was mainly assessed using the SF-36 (The Short Form (36) Health Survey v2),functional outcome was measured using the musculoskeletal tumor society score (MSTS) as well as the Tegner activity level scale. Results: Average age at the time of surgery was 19 +/- 10 year. and 32 +/- 11 year. at the time of follow up. Mean follow-up was 14 +/- 9 years. The SF-36 scores accounted for 80.4 +/- 15.7 regarding physical functioning, for 78.1 +/- 24.1 regarding the physical role functioning, for 74.1 +/- 17.6 regarding bodily pain and for 71.8 +/- 26.1 regarding general health. SF-36 score for vitality was 75.0 +/- 12.8, for social functioning 98.9 +/- 3.6, 88.2 +/- 23.9 for emotional role functioning and 89.6 +/- 10.1 for the mental health. Comparison to a representative German sample cohort revealed significantly higher patient's scores for vitality, social functioning and mental health (p < 0.05). The overall MSTS resulted in an average of 64 +/- 12 % and the Tegner activity level scale accounted for 4.1 +/- 0.6 pts. Conclusions: The presented long-term results indicate that rotationplasty provides a high quality of life. Patients are satisfied with a good functional outcome regarding activities of daily life and even sports

    In this work we discuss the practical and conceptual issues related to quark-hadron-duality in heavy-heavy systems. Recent measurements in the charmonium region allow a direct test of quark-hadron-duality. We present a formula for non-resonant background production in e^+ e^- \to D{\bar D} and extract the resonance parameters of the \psi(3S)-\psi(6S).     Phagocytosis and digestion of pH-sensitive fluorescent dye (Eos-FP) transfected E. coli in whole blood assays from patients with severe sepsis and septic shock

    The function of phagocytic and antigen presenting cells is of crucial importance to sustain immune competence against infectious agents as well as malignancies. We here describe a reproducible procedure for the quantification of phagocytosis by leukocytes in whole blood. For this, a pH-sensitive green-fluorescent protein- (GFP) like dye (Eos-FP) is transfected into infectious microroganisms. After UV-irradiation, the transfected bacteria emit green (≈5160 nm) and red (≈581 nm) fluorescent light at 490 nm excitation. Since the red fluorescent light is sensitive to acidic pH, the phagocytosed bacteria stop emitting red fluorescent light as soon as the phagosomes fuse with lysosomes. The green fluorescence is maintained in the phagolysosome until pathogen degradation is completed. Fluorescence emission can be followed by flow cytometry with filter settings documenting fluorescence 1 (FL 1, FITC) and fluorescence 2 (FL 2, phycoerythrin, PE). Eos-FP transfected bacteria can also be traced within phagocytes using microscopical techniques. A standardized assay has been developed which is suitable for clinical studies by providing clinicians with syringes pre-filled with fixed and appropriately UV-irradiated Eos-FP E. coli (TruCultureℱ). After adding blood or body fluids to these containers and starting the incubation at 37°C, phagocytosis by granulocytes proceeds over time. Cultures can be terminated at a given time by lysing red blood cells followed by flow cytometry. A pilot study demonstrated that Eos-FP E. coli phagocytosis and digestion was up-regulated in the majority of patients with either severe sepsis or septic shock as compared to healthy donors (p < 0.0001 after o/n incubation). Following treatment with recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (rhG-CSF) in selected patients with sepsis, phagolysosome fusion appeared to be accelerated
